HAPPY NEW YEAR!

The Ginnel Project has taken the lull in these winter weeks to catch up with itself and plan for 2024. We did so much in 2023 accompanied by many obstacles. We hope that the news about the ginnel is permeating through Chapeltown. Look out for our plans in 2024 some of which will involve A BIG CLEAN UP and another Light Night event in October. Get involved.

See the feedback and images from the October 2023 in Latest Activites page. It was such a good event.

A project about renewal and transformation of the ginnel in Chapeltown.

The ginnel is an old public walkway that has been around since 1840, probably earlier. It may also be known as Buslingthorpe Way. When Chapeltown was just hay fields, people and horses traveled along that path to Chapel Allerton village or into Leodis.

Do you use the ginnel?

In the project, funded by Leeds Culture Trust as part of Leeds 2023 ‘Letting Culture Loose’ programme, we have found that some residents of Chapeltown are not aware of the ginnel!

We want to know what you think, how would you want to see the ginnel improved?

How should local people benefit from this feature?

Do you want to be involved?

We want to hear from you

The most important part of this project is you. We want to hear directly from you about what you would like to see or do. What is your view about this space, how could it be an attractive space for visitors and residents to be happy in and linger a while?

‘Utilise open areas as part of carnival celebration, street theatre, buskers, food stalls, fringe?’

We have been asking people all year about what they would like to see, through walks, litter picking, social media, online questionnaires and have plans to visit community groups to visualize what the space could look like.

An important activity we have planned is to ask every household, with a LS7 3 postcode, what they would like to see in the space and invite participation. Every household  with the LS7 3 postcode will receive a postcard giving information about the project.

Posters will be distributed through out the LS7 area, in shops, community centres, doctors surgeries and community notice boards.

Suggestions for the ginnel so far include:

  • Setting up a community garden

  • Installing lighting and benches

  • Art installations

Leeds 2023 - A Year of Culture

2023 will be a transformational year like no other. 12 signature events and a multitude of creative experiences are happening all over our city. From dance to design, art to architecture, poetry to pop, sculpture to sport, grassroots community theatre to performances on our world-class stages, there’s something for everyone, no matter where you live or what you like.

We think culture is everywhere in this city and this is our time to shout about it. We’re working with local, national and international artists and communities to create a celebration that’s for Leeds, with Leeds and inspired by Leeds.

LEEDS 2023 will be an explosion of colour, noise and brilliance that will show the world in our city and our city to the world.Use this space to add more details about your site, a customer quote, or to talk about important news.
