A community Gathering

The Ginnel Project is having an event that concludes the initial funding period that made all this happen. The funding from Leeds 2023 as part of the My World My City My Neighbourhood is one of 23 areas and artists funded to carry out a co-creative project. The main aim is to ensure everyone has a say in what creative project takes place on their doorstep leading up to and including Leeds 2023

What’s the point of a ‘gathering’?

The task of carrying out a community consultation is nearing its conclusion. The consultation focused on the ginnel/walkway/path that runs from Potternewton Lane down to Norma Hutchinson Park. Different methods were used to gather information from residents; workshops, online questionnaires, chats in the ginnel, and the distribution of over 3000 postcards to households in the LS7 3 area. Social media  tools were employed to generate interest and participation.

The gathering is a way of sharing the projects achievements and continue to engage residents about how to be active in their environment. The community garden will be showcased and artists can demonstrate how the ginnel could look with art on it.

Most importantly, let’s meet our neighbours!

Planters made, painted and in situ.

The weather was good and the community gathered.

There was juggling. Cllr Jane Dowson doing an impressive job with Cllr Mohammed looking on in awe. Pete White was our circus perfomer.

Everyone contributed to the planting.

Here is Kate passing on gardening skills to the next generation.

Hyrograff worked with chalk paint on this wall.

Chalk paint gives us a glimpse of what the ginnel could look like with art work along its path. This paint is temporary and comes off over time.

Clare Murphy said on Facebook:

‘We loved seeing the art this weekend, we walk the length of the ginnel each week between dance classes and school, really excited to see the changes and will be along to say hi at the next meet hopefully!!’

Thank you Clare!

Lots of mother and daughter moments.

Food was provided by The Cabin - Caribbean Restaurant at Reginald Row LS7.

Drumming accompanied the afternnoon.

Countryman and Bobo provided a back drop of drumming with Djembe and claves, it was an open invitation for anyone to join in, which they did.

Thank you to everyone that conributed and made the event a success.

The Ginnel Project is not over. We need all of our communities to come together to make this space a place to be proud of, to feel safe in and to be respected by walkers, dog owners and cyclists.

This is a co-creative project where we work together, share ownership of decisions, made together about where we live.
