A Walk Down the Ginnel in January 2022, gave those that participated a taste of what the project was about and an opportunity to have a say about the ginnel and the potential it has. It also gave local business some publicity and income. Canned Heat kindly hosted the ‘after party’ and provided hot and cold beverages and a local cater provided the refreshments.
The Ginnel Project gardening group has made a good start on the community garden that already existed on the ginnel.
Old rotten planters were removed along with the weeds and new wooden planters will replace those. Wood bought and pre-cut from Leeds Wood Recycling will be made into new planters.
A wood workshop is planned for this to happen. All welcome ot participate.
These were intended to use creative and engaging methods to consult with groups that might not get the opportunity to have their say. Two workshops were organised, parents and children and an older people's group. Participants took the time to draw, cut out and discuss what they would want to see in the ginnel of the future. Commonalities with both groups particularly around seating and planting with colour being a feature.
Elders group had a blast cutting out and discussing how the ginnel could look. Much laughter ensued.
There are more events in the pipeline. As long as there is participation there will be activities for all to get involved. We haven’t reached critical mass just yet but we are getting there.

As the community garden develops it needs more attention. The gardening group have taken out the old rotten wood planters and they are being replaced. This workshop will be making the new ones.

This activity has taken the longest to orchestrate and plan. It is hoped that every household with a LS7 3 postcode will receive a postcard giving information about the ginnel project and is asking residents' opinions.
The cards can be posted back into Reginald Centre where a postbox will be placed for 2-3 weeks. Alternatively individuals can go on-line and fill out the questionnaire. A prize draw of £50 for the postcards and £50 for the online questionnaire is available for the lucky winners.
Click Learn More to fill out the questionnaire. It is only 5-7 mins of your time.
The final event of this funded part of the project will be a communitygathering packed with artists and a taste of what the ginnel could be or look like. Look out for dates and details via social media. Get in touch to know more.

The funding for this ends in May however the project will continue. The Ginnel has so much potential for 2023 and should be an asset that Chapeltown residents will be proud of. Nothing can happen without the efforts of individuals and groups in the community. Let’s co-create together.
